Extension to the Design Faculty at Cartmel Priory School
The extension to the Design Faculty consists of a new computer room, a new art room and the refurbishment of the existing resistant materials workshop and classroom. The extension is located in the centre of the west elevation of the school and is flanked by two of the original wings designed in 1954. Because of its location, the new gable end was conceived as a focal point for this elevation.
The composition is designed around four wide pilasters built in textured blockwork that matches the adjoining wings. These carry precast concrete capitals below the pediment. The pediment is broken by a semicircular arch and the render on the pediment is painted in a darker shade to further define this arch. In the centre of the arch is an inset sandstone panel carved in the form of a tree held symbolically in outstretched palms. This is the work of the sculptor Danny Clahane.
The windows are in white UPVC to match the windows elsewhere in the school and on the two outer bays there are grey solid UPVC infil panels between the windows to contrast with the render in the central bay.
