The Bus Shelters in Milnthorpe
The Bus Shelters in Milnthorpe were commissioned by the Parish Council and are located on the 555 bus route – the main bus route through the Lake District.
The shelters are on each side of the main road in the centre of Milnthorpe, a Conservation Area, and are designed to blend in among the stone and slate buildings. The brief called specifically for open shelters without walls. They have a painted steel frame supporting a roof structure of clear finished Douglas Fir timber which is visible from below. The boarding is also Douglas Fir, designed with a beaded detail at the joints. The roof is covered with local slate with cut slate hips and there is a lead finial at the apex. The ground surface is paved in a pattern using precast concrete slabs and contrasting setts.
